Casting Crowns recieves top group honors
10 April 2006

Casting Crowns was named Group of the Year for the second consecutive year at the 37th Annual Gospel Music Awards last evening. The band’s recent GRAMMY-winning project, Lifesong, was also recognized with the Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Album.

Frontman Mark Hall notes, “The GMA awards we received were God’s reminder to us that He uses ordinary people (like us) to be a part of extraordinary things like reaching the world with the Gospel. He adds, “Being a part of the tribute to Steven Curtis Chapman definitely had to be the highlight of my night. He is a hero to me and so many – a hero in Christian music and a Hero of the faith.”

Casting Crowns went into tonight’s awards with five group nominations including Artist and Group of the Year, with lead singer and songwriter Mark Hall recognized for an additional four nods, including Songwriter of the Year. Hall penned two songs nominated in the Song of the Year category, “Voice of Truth” a co-write with Steven Curtis Chapman, and “Lifesong,” the first single from the Lifesong project which topped Christian radio charts in 2005 for 11 weeks at AC (R&R) and 12 weeks at INSPO (CRW).

Hall also participated in a surprise tribute to Steven Curtis Chapman, who won his record-setting 50th Dove Award last evening. Third Day’s Mac Powell, David Crowder, Jeremy Camp and Hall sang acoustic versions of some of Chapman’s biggest hits, in what was one of the night’s biggest highlights.

The GMA Music Awards show was presented last night at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville with awards having been voted on by the nearly 4,500 members of the Gospel Music Association. The awards show will be televised in national syndication April 15 to May 1, 2006.

Casting Crowns received its first GRAMMY earlier this year for its sophomore recording, Lifesong (8/30/2005). While this project was certified Gold after just 12 weeks in the market, the band has sold a total of nearly two million records in its short two-year career. In 2004, Casting Crowns’ self-titled debut album quickly earned the highest first-week sales of any debut artist on Nielsen SoundScan Christian market sales chart for the year, eventually selling over 1.3 million units. The project’s three radio singles all spent multiple weeks at No. 1 on numerous charts, including a record-breaking 13 weeks at number one for the mega hit, “Voice of Truth.” For the year 2004, Casting Crowns was the most played artist on all Christian radio formats combined, and performed to more than one million people in concert.
