Skin: Daily Incarnation

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39). Danica never really understood what that verse meant till she went on a mission trip with her youth group last summer.

Nothing was easy about the trip. The place where they stayed was run-down. There was no hot water. Toilets? Never mind. But somehow, even in the middle of all those discomforts, Danica realized that she was gaining a lot when she looked into the faces of the young children they were teaching.

[LINK] Jesus was “the Word” who became flesh—the ultimate visual aid to help us understand who God is and what’s on His heart. The words that God said about Himself and that others said about Him in the Old Testament came to life in a living, breathing person.

Jesus says: “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work” (John 14:10).

But the Word becoming flesh wasn’t just a one-time thing that happened many, many Christmases ago. The Word still becomes flesh as you live out what the Bible says every day. Yes, we said “you.” Because the truth is that when you live out what God says in His Word, people around you get a clearer glimpse of who God is and what is on His heart. The Bible says: If anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did (1 John 2:5-6). That’s how we know we are following Christ—and that’s how other people know as well. Our actions back up our words as we live out what the Bible says.

[THINK] Read the following quotes and let them marinate in your brain. Both are from St. Francis of Assisi.
“Preach the gospel at all times, and when necessary use words.”
“It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.”
Those quotes ring true because, honestly, no one is going to believe anything you say unless you live it out first. And when you live out what you read in God’s Word, that Word becomes flesh and blood to those around you.

[LIVE] Have you ever had one of those “Aha!” moments when you more clearly understood something God said in His Word because you saw someone live it out? Maybe you saw God meet a need or heal someone, or you saw someone forgive something that seemed unforgivable. Maybe someone extended grace and mercy to you when you didn’t deserve it. Whatever it was, when it happened, the Word became flesh. If you haven’t experienced that, ask God to bring you one of those moments.

[NXT LVL] Following Jesus isn’t just about reading your Bible; it’s about living out what it says. Read Luke 11:28 and James 1:22-25.
