02 June 2008
Yusuf Pathan’s sensational all round performance helped Rajasthan Royals win the thrilling last-ball final of the Indian Premier League 2008 against Chennai Super Kings.
Rajasthan Royals won the toss and as a team known for excellent fielding, captain Shane Warne elected to field first. The Chennai Super Kings lead by M S Dhoni managed to put up a formidable score of 163, with Parthiv Patel and S. Vidyut adding 39 for the first wicket and Raina producing 43 off 30 balls.
However, Pathan struck a lethal blow to their good start, and picked up 3 crucial wickets along the way. He later scored 56 runs, his fourth half-century of the tournament, giving the Royals the lead they needed.
The match came down to the last over, with the Royals requiring 8 off the last over bowled by Lakshimipathy Balaji. A wide ball was followed by a fumble by Super Kings wicket keepr Parthiv Patel, and Tanvir managed to get one run of the last ball, allowing the Royals to win by 3 wickets - a nail-biting finish to say the least.
Pathan was awarded a much deserved Man of the Match award, while Shane Watson walked away with the Man of the Series. The Orange Cap for the highest scorer all season went to Shaun Marsh of Kings XI Punjab.
The DLF Indian Premier League is where all Indian eyes have been glued this summer. With a combination of 8 teams owned by bollywood stars and India’s business tycoons, several of the world’s top players, short and sweet yet thrilling 20-20 cricket, glamorous cheer leaders, scintillating music and performances, appearances by well known stars, much hyped scandals and big money all around, Indian audience could not ask for anything more. With its grand success this very first series, no doubt IPL will be a much awaited cricket event, akin to World Cup Cricket, in the coming years.
