True Character

Character and integrity are two of the strongest words you’ll ever hear associated with someone. They are attributes of someone that lives by convictions and is consistent with them. Situations, peer pressure, and the ‘heat of the moment’ don’t influence their choices, but it is their values that govern their decisions. Everything about them, and everything they do represents truth and honesty.

We’ve all been in situations no matter how big or small where we’ve faced the choice to either tell the truth or lie. The temptation to lie seems so strong because we are either embarrassed or ashamed of ourselves, feel pressured by others, or we are scared of the consequences that could result in being honest.

Sometimes we claim to be honest people , while we are being deceitful towards a friend or neighbor, hiding the truth, or spreading rumors. It’s the same exact thing as a lie. All of these are examples of times in our lives where we face the decision to set ourselves apart from the world, or to fall captive to the traps laid out by the enemy. Our choices build and shape our foundation, and will define our true self.

Proverbs 12:22 - The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.

God makes His feelings about lying and deceitfulness very clear to us . He has such distaste for them because they separate us from Him. We are all one body of brothers and sisters under Christ, and while He desires intimacy with us, we are out there deceiving our neighbors, lying to our friends and family, and spreading rumors to make ourselves look better. We aren’t just hurting others, we’re hurting ourselves in a very real way, and we’re also hurting God and our relationship with Him.

Ephesians 4:29 - Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

It is so important for us to live by our convictions and to build our foundation on the Word of God so that when situations arise where lying and deceit are an option, we will not compromise our character and our integrity. We will be people who stand firm on truth and with our words, represent God in a very real and very honest way.

Proverbs 12:19 - Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

I challenge you today to start being honest in everything you do, even in the smallest things. If you are struggling with the temptation to lie, decide today to stand on convictions that separate you from the rest of the world. While people around you will lie and deceive to dodge consequences or try to get ahead in life, you will be honest and truthful even when it hurts the most because you know that you were called to living a life of excellence, and that God’s promises will hold true to those who are faithful to His Word.
