Political, Military Pressure on Israel Increase
16 July 2009

From Iran to the United Nations to Washington D.C., the military and political pressure on Israel has grown to unprecedented levels.

The recent turbulence in the streets of Iran has not stopped its leaders' drive to get nuclear weapons or to wipe out the state of Israel.

At the same time, the Obama Administration has sent mixed messages about whether Israel would have U.S. support to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities.

CBN News Middle East Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell gave his insight on the mounting pressure on Israel. Click play for his analysis.

Washington seems to have put a much higher priority on stopping Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the biblical lands of Judea and Samaria.

"The president has said it very clearly," said Ian Kelly, U.S. State Department spokesman. "My boss, Secretary Clinton, has said it very clearly--and that is that we oppose continued settlement activity."

Backed by the Europeans and the United Nations, the drive for a Palestinian state is in high gear, with Israel portrayed as the major roadblock to peace.

In fact, surveys this decade have shown that in 15 European nations, Israel has been considered the greatest threat to world peace. Even among Israel's staunchest ally, the United States, support for Israel dropped 20 points in the last nine months, from 69 to 49 percent.

Still, the Jewish state, surrounded by enemies with thousands of missiles, continues to become a world power in high technology, medicine and science.
