Joy Electric can be likened to a finely tuned machine. Picking up from the lost sounds of the future, circa 1978, and pioneered by such luminaries as Kraftwerk, The Human League, John Foxx and Gary Numan, Joy Electric has emerged as the musical voice of melodic discipline over the course of their 10 year history. But the journey is far from over, especially considering JE's remarkably prolific output of innovative and song-perfect analog-pop. Armed with nothing other than their familiar claim of "synthesizers & vocals only" slogan that appears inside their often vague record sleeves, there is a melodic consistency at work here that defies as well as confirms the tradition of pop and futurism. Ronnie Martin, the creative force behind the JE moniker likes to describe what he does as "something that is slowly refined over time. I use the same methods for every recording, so the idea isn't in making grand changes but simply making a better version of the sound already established." Joy Electric is nothing if not an established sound. Pure analog tones beep, bubble, click and blend perfectly together to form a dizzying sound collage that could best be compared to the assembly line at Wonka's candy factory. This could well be nothing more than the sound of controlled chaos if not for the beautifully catchy and clever melodies that are weaved throughout the mix by the icy and silvery voiced tones of Martin and his microphone.
