Don't Worry! Be Happy!

“Can’t sleep at night?”
“Don’t know what to do?”
“Feel like nobody cares?”
“Ready to give up?”

Well, just don’t worry about it. Heard that before? Of course you have. Plus if you’re like me, you’ve probably told other people that exact same thing. And then that very same night stayed up all night worrying about a problem in your life! We all know that clichés don’t answer our problems.

What are you worried about? Wondering what you’re going to do after school? Feel like you’ll never see your dreams come true? Have you given up on finding that one special person? Or maybe your worries are of serious nature. After all, this is a pretty scary world we live in isn’t it?

So what can we do? Don’t worry about it! That’s right! Don’t worry about it. At least that’s what Jesus said when people asked him about worry.

Matthew 6:25 - "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.

But you see, when He said these words, he didn’t use them as a cliché. He knew WHY we shouldn’t worry. In Matthew 6:25-34, He offers several reasons why worry shouldn’t keep us up at night:

1. There’s something more to life.
Matthew 6:25 - …Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Jesus said that we shouldn’t even worry about having food and clothing because he knew that true life was about much more than paying our bills, graduating from school, or getting that high paying job. True life is about a relationship with God everyday.
Brother Lawrence, a monk in the Middle Ages, knew that life was about living it with God. He spent almost thirty years cleaning dishes for the other monks. Yet, he was able to turn this mundane chore into a time of fellowship with God. He talked to God just like a friend. Thus, his life became a moment by moment experience in the presence of God.
But does the presence of God help us not to worry? In Batman Begins there is a scene in which the film’s villain, Ra’a Al Gul, threatens a little boy. Yet, the boy replies, “He’ll come.” He was confident that Batman would be there to save him. We know Someone much greater than a superhero; we know the Creator of the universe. Daily communion with Him strengthens us to face our worries. Yet sometimes our worries seem so big that we begin to doubt not only God’s presence, but His existence as well. Have you been there? Or are you there now? Well, don’t worry. Just look at the sky.

2. God cares about us.
Matthew 6:26 - Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap … and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?

Jesus knew how much God cares for His creation. That’s why He told us to look at the birds in the sky. They don’t sow. They don’t reap. And they don’t worry about food! Yet they ALWAYS have something to eat because God cares and provides for them.
In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, mankind is presented as the climax, or highest achievement, of God’s creative efforts. We alone are created in His image. We alone are invited to enjoy such a deep, loving relationship with Him. Thus if God provides for His “lesser” creation, here the birds, we can be pretty confident that He will also provide for His “greater” creation, us!

3. God knows what we need.
Matthew 6:32 - … for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

Not only God cares and provides but He also KNOWS our needs like our parents. In my life, I was fortunate to have parents who model God’s cares. When I was sick, they prayed and took care of me. They knew my need for comfort when I was discouraged. It is similar with our Father who designed us; He knows everything about us including our needs. So, should we worry?

You know my answer, “Don’t worry!” But this time, I encourage you to believe why Jesus encouraged you not to worry. If you are feeling overwhelmed, look at His creation and trust Him to provide. If you don’t feel anyone cares for you, remember God’s sovereign. He knows your need. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s have fellowship with Him, hold on His words, and give away your concerns to Him.

Philippians 1:6 - For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
