Hope Question - Big Decision? Return to previous page
Q: I am in my senior year of high school and I would like to go to college. However, I do not know what major I should take and which college I should go. What would be your suggestion? Sometimes, I am afraid that I will choose the wrong choice.

A: You bring up a good question. As a college student, I also faced similar situations after I graduated from high school. Those questions are hard to answer and sometimes they cause confusion. However, in my journey the Bible reminded me how God comforted His people when they were discouraged by their future. He said,

"'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the lord, 'Plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you," (Jer. 29:11-14a).

I questioned myself, if God cares for His people, should He care for me? These words reminded me that He knows my future. Thus, this truth is for everybody including you; God knows your future and even what college that you should go to. The challenge is how we find this out.

We could learn how to find His will by learning from others; for example, David, Israel’s king. In times of confusion, he asked God, “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground” (Ps. 143:10). So we should ask God to reveal His will in our lives through our prayers. I have testified how God showed His will for my college and I am satisfied by His choice. Amazingly He will direct our path and close doors and opportunity that don’t line up with it. Once again, we should seek Him and bring up our requests before Him. I am sure that He will lead your path.

Another step is to search different colleges and find your interest. This is significant because we do not want you to study something that you do not like. I would suggest that you request catalog from different colleges.

Also, you need to consider environment and friends. Can you study and grow in this college environment? What kind of students go to this college? What do people say about this college? What is their reputation in society? These questions should be addressed before you decide.

Now, it is your part to decide what steps you will do. I pray that you will find the right college and major to study.
